While Korean engineering universities have been somewhat hesitant in the evaluation rankings of 2019 THE Asia-Pacific universities, the growth of private universities has been marked in the latest evaluation. 29 universities in our country were ranked in the rankings from this evaluation and there are two more compared to last year. Seoul National University, Sungkyunkwan University, and KAIST are in the top 20 rankings and a total of 10 universities ranked higher than the previous year include Seoul National University, Sungkyunkwan University, Korea University, UNIST, Kyung Hee University, Hanyang University, Kyungpook National University, Ajou University, Incheon National University (newly ranked) and Kookmin University (newly ranked).
In particular, Sungkyunkwan University ranked 14th overall this year, up six notches from the previous year. Since it first entered the top 20 in the Asia-Pacific region last year, it has shown rapid growth, ranking second among all universities in South Korea and No. 1 among private universities. This year's leap of Sungkyunkwan University seems to be due to good results in the paper citation counts and industrial-school cooperation. Among them, the paper scored 74.8 points, higher than Seoul National University (64.2), which ranks first in Korean universities
Sungkyunkwan University established the Sungkyun Science and Technology Institute of Bio Convergence (2016) and the Intelligent Information Convergence Institute (2017), and has started developing leading models in convergence research in order to establish a foundation of capacity for convergence in culture, art and media sectors throughout 2018. As a result, SKKU also topped the list of Korean universities in the medical, natural science and art fields in the rankings of 2019 released in January. In the natural science category, it ranked 84th in the world, up from the 101-125 ranking recorded in the previous year.
"The characteristic of Sungkyunkwan University's Convergence Education is to provide students with an educational experience to discover and solve problems on their own." said Lee Sang-won, director of the Center for Innovation and Sharing at Sungkyunkwan University. "We encourage students to be creative and cooperative in a truly meaningful way through self-directed field trainings ." he explained. "The school has been focusing on creating synergy effects through shared growth in education and research for years by recruiting world-famous scholars as professors and introducing a global-level education system," said Shin Wan-sun, head of the Department of Planning and Coordination at Sungkyunkwan University.
