- Prof. Woo-Jae Chung of Dept. Genetic Engineering published research paper on Nano Letters
- Prof. Woo-Jae Chung of Dept. Genetic Engineering published research paper on Nano Letters “Biomimetic Self-Templated Hierarchical Structures of Collagen-Like Peptide Amphiphiles” A research team headed by Prof. Chung Woo-Jae from the Department of Genetic Engineering at Sungkyunkwan University has developed biomimetic self-templated hierarchical structures of collagen-like peptide amphiphiles. Developing hierarchically structured biomaterials with tunable chemical and physical properties like those found in nature is critically important to regenerative medicine and studies on tissue morphogenesis. Despite advances in materials synthesis and assembly processes, our ability to control hierarchical assembly using fibrillar biomolecules remains limited. Prof. Chung's research team developed a bio-inspired approach to create collagen-like materials through directed evolutionary screening and directed self-assembly. They first synthesized peptide amphiphiles by coupling phage display-identified collagen-like peptides to long-chain fatty acids. Then, researchers assembled the amphiphiles into diverse, hierarchically organized, nanofibrous structures using directed self-assembly based on liquid crystal flow and its controlled deposition. The resulting structures sustained and directed the growth of bone cells and hydroxyapatite biominerals. We believe these self-assembling collagen-like amphiphiles could prove useful in the structural design of tissue regenerating materials. "Our combined strategy of directed evolutionary screening and self-templating assembly provides opportunities for developing multifunctional biomimetic peptide-based materials and represents a means to study the dynamics of biomolecule-based supramolecular assemblies, areas that will play essential roles in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine," said Prof. Chung. The results were published online by 'ACS Nano', an international chemical and nanomaterial journal, on September 22, 2015. - SKKU takes no.1 spot in business firm recruiting preferrence
- SKKU takes no.1 spot in business firm recruiting preferrence Sungkyunkwan university(SKKU) is tied for No.1 along with Yonsei university in the ‘reputation’ index of JoongAng Daily University Rankings. SKKU marked No.1 in ‘preferred new employee’s university’ and ‘university with great growth potential.’ Yonsei University marked No.1 in ‘university with great students education’. Kyungpook National University, Pusan National University, Chungnam National University took No.1 to No.3 in ‘university with great dedication to local community’ Associating with a research institution ‘Research & Research’, JoongAng Daily conducted a survey of 550 recruiting managers in companies and public institutions and 550 highschool teachers through a face to face interview. Also a new survey was added for the first time made by 550 administrative rank holding professors (presidents, deans, vice presidents ect.) of universities. This is a result of adhering to opinions to adopt peer review by the professors who are aware of the changes in universities, and to apply it to the general evaluation. Professors selected SKKU as No.1 and Hanyang university(erica campus) as No.2 in ‘university with great specialization’. The direction for SKKU’s specialization is ‘fusion.’ By the ‘Fusion Seed Research Support Program’ which started last year, they researched into projects such as ‘measurement of environmental radiation from cellphone’ which is a fusion of Department of Journalism and Mass Communication with Department of Physics. From next year, all new students will be given software education regardless of their majors so that they can promote the fusion ability of their own majors and IT technologies. Recruiting managers in companies, teachers and professors selected SKKU, Yonsei University(Seoul), Korea University(Anam), Seoul National University, Pusan National University as ‘School with great growth potential’ (No.1 ~ No.5). Among ‘Non in-seoul’ universities, Gachon University(No.6) Hanyang University ERICA campus(No.8) were selected in the top ten. Both of them took leaps on rankings compared to last year ranks (Gachon University No.21, Hanyang University ERICA campus No.26). Having done with an integration process of (Gachon University College of Medicine, Gachon Gil University, Kyungwon College, Kyungwon Univerisity), Gachon University focuses on cultivating talents specialized on IT by industry-academic cooperation with Pangyo Techno Valley. < Software education for humanities studies studetns at SKKU> College of Biotechnology and Bioengineering

- SKKU, 118 place in the QS World University Ranking, 4 subjects ranking within top 100
- SKKU, 118 place in the QS World University Ranking, 4 subjects ranking within top 100 [2015 World University Rankings] Individual Ranking for 5 subject areas QS(Qucequarelli Symonds) disclosed its World University Rankings along with the Rankings of Subjects of Arts & Humanities, Engineering & Technology, Life Sciences & Medicine, Natural Sciences, Social Sciences. Among the Korean universities, Seoul National University(SNU) put all 5 areas of study within the top 50, while Sungkyunkwan Univ.(SKKU) & Korea Univ. put in 4 areas, KAIST & Yonsei Univ. put in 3 areas within 100th place, continuing their advance from last year. Korean universities, especially, did well in Engineering & Technology. MIT in USA ranked the NO.1 as last year, Stanford University (USA) ranked NO. 2, followed by Cambridge University (UK). KAIST was 13th, SNU was the 15th, POSTECH was the 41st, etc, making up the 3 Korean universities that put there names in the top 50 in the World Rankings. When you include SKKU (51st), Korea & Yonsei (tied for 57th), Hanyang Univ.(67th), a total 7 universities come into the top 100. Last year 4 Korean universities were in the top 100, KAIST, SNU, POSTECH and SKKU. In Natural Sciences, MIT also NO. 1. followed by Harvard Univ.(USA) and Cambridge Univ.(UK). SNU and Cornell Univ.(USA) tied for 23rd, and KAIST jumped from 54th last year to 28th. Additionally, POSTECH(67th), Korea Univ.(72nd), SKKU(78th), making total of 5 universities in the top 100. In Social Sciences, Harvard Univ. ranked 1st. 2nd and 3rd were LSE and Oxford Univ. in the UK, respectively. The ranking of SNU, Korea Univ. and Yonsei Univ. which were in top 50 last year, it gained little putting them at 24th, 34th and 42nd respectively in this year. SKKU took 58th which was 65th last year, KAIST took 67th entering the top 100 for the first time. In Arts & Humanities, Oxford Univ.(UK) was NO.1, followed by Harvard (USA) and Cambridge (UK).
